The Olive Press

The Chanukah miracle happened with olive oil: one small jar, enough for one day, burned for eight. In this workshop, kids make olive oil from scratch and then light the menorah with it.

What happens

Step by step

  1. Meet the olive

Kids handle fresh olives and branches, sort them by ripeness, and hear why the Temple needed the purest oil.

  2. Crush

Everyone takes a turn crushing olives into a thick paste with stone and wood tools.

  3. Press

The paste goes into the olive press. Kids crank it together and watch the olive juice run out.

  4. Spin

The juice goes into a centrifuge, which separates the oil from the water and pulp. Kids see the golden layer appear.

  5. Light

We twist cotton wicks, fill the menorah cups with the oil we made, and light it together.

The finale: the menorah, lit with oil the kids pressed themselves.
